ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION
Truckee Meadows Water Authority (TMWA) is a not-for-profit, community-owned water utility, overseen by elected officials and citizen appointees from Reno, Sparks and Washoe County. TMWA has a highly skilled workforce who ensure the around-the-clock treatment, delivery and availability of high-quality drinking water for more than 475,000 residents of the Truckee Meadows.
We are looking to hire an ASSOCIATE HYDROLOGIST, to join our NATURAL RESOURCES Department.
POSITION SUMMARY
The Associate Hydrologist is an entry level position in hydrologic sciences who assists with the collection and management of hydrologic and operational water data used to develop, maintain and protect TMWA’s surface water resources, assets, and related rights.

- Maintains water-use data and water-production datasets and related databases.
- Collects, validates and tabulates statistical data related to surface- and groundwater hydrology.
- Performs field hydrology and hydrogeology work (e.g., flow measurement, gauging, monitoring) and prepares document filings.
- Assists with source-water protection projects and watershed partnerships and committees.
- Conducts hydrologic studies of general and project-specific water resource issues, including data collection, analysis, development and maintenance.
- Provides operational support in absence of senior staff.
- Develops working knowledge of Truckee River operations and the Truckee River Operating Agreement (TROA).
- Assists with coordination of river operations with partner agencies.
- Contributes to planning, drafting, coordinating, and public outreach for long-term Water Resource Planning and other special reports.
- Prepares and files reports in compliance with all applicable federal, state, county and local requirements.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the minimum requirements is:
Experience: One (1) to two (2) years of experience in field hydrology and/or water resources management (internships, research assistantships, and relevant project experience may be considered).
Education & Training: Post-secondary education, typically a Bachelor’s degree (and/or Master’s) in Hydrology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or a closely related field.
Must have working-level knowledge of the English language including reading, writing, and speaking English.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURE, AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must hold a valid driver’s license from the State of Nevada or, for applicants who reside in another state within a commutable distance (including students), a valid driver’s license issued by their state of residence.
- Must also meet and maintain eligibility to be covered under TMWA’s vehicle insurance requirements.
- State of Nevada Operator Certification in Water Distribution/Water Treatment is desired but not required.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation. During hire by TMWA and periodically during employment, background investigations may be conducted.
This position is considered a safety sensitive position and employment is contingent upon the results of drug and/or alcohol testing which includes screening for marijuana. The presence of marijuana or other screened for substances on any employment related substance test may result in a refusal to hire or termination of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
Principles and practices of hydrology and hydrogeology, including field measurement techniques and monitoring of surface- and groundwater. Data collection methodologies, data quality control/assurance and statistical approaches used in hydrologic studies. Water-resource infrastructure (e.g., dams, diversions, gates, canals, ditches, irrigation delivery systems). Applicable Nevada water laws, water rights administration and related operational/reporting requirements. Common software applications, (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) for data management, analysis, reporting, and communication.
Skilled in/Ability to:
Analyze hydrologic datasets, apply appropriate statistical methods, and interpret technical information accurately. Perform technical evaluations; organize and manage multiple assignments, priorities, and deadlines in a dynamic operational environment. Communicate clearly and professionally, both orally and in writing, with internal teams, outside agencies. and the public. Build and maintain effective working relationships and demonstrate professionalism and customer service in all interactions. Use field instrumentation and data-collection devices; follow established safety protocols during field activities. Exercise sound judgment and timely decision-making, especially during field measurements or when supporting river operations. Demonstrate reliability and punctuality consistent with TMWA’s work hour expectations.
